Full-surface bonding of tiles onto a metal click system.

Introduction.

BIT Hotmelt Technology was invited to Deko to come up with a solution. Deko is evolving in the ceramics industry and is innovating by producing panels and solutions with the help of a robot.

Deko was looking for a way to apply PU Hotmelt to the metal click system used for creating (temporary) ceramic tile floors. This would allow the ceramic tiles to be placed fully automatic by a robot.

This new application introduced complex challenges. Not only was extreme precision required due to the high quality standards of the final product, but the system also had to be future-proof, low-maintenance, and reliable.

Case-Specific challenges .

Precision of glue application

Both edge precision and the exact amount of adhesive applied are crucial for an optimal result.

Implementation on the existing robot line

The solution had to be a plug & play setup that could easily be integrated into the current line. This meant the frame, adjustments, and control system also had to be delivered.

Low maintenance

For Deko, PU Hotmelt technology was a new development. This type of adhesive requires specific care, so expert advice on equipment and maintance was essential.

Solutions BIT Hotmelt Technology.

Together with Deko, BIT Hotmelt Technology realized a complete solution to apply PU Hotmelt to the metal click system:

1. Adjustment options and control
BIT Hotmelt Technology developed a setup where height adjustment is powered by an actuator. The lateral adjustment of the two glue heads can be carried out easily, manually, and precisely via a spindle adjustment, allowing any desired width to be set. The Starbi control unit, equipped with an encoder and combined with valves, ensures accurate start and stop of adhesive dispensing.

2. Steel frame
After measuring the existing line, a coated steel frame was designed and built. This frame holds the glue heads with adjustments, the Starbi control system and all other components.

3. Use of the actuator
Thanks to the actuator, the modules can easily be moved into maintenance position after use, into the drain, which keeps the nozzles sealed off from oxygen. This prevents unwanted reactions of the PU adhesive. The glue unit used is the Meler Micron+ Titan PUR, which is specially designed for processing PU Hotmelt adhesives.

Our achievements.

  • The ceramic tiles are firmly fixed to the innovative click system
  • With just 2 minutes of daily attention, the system runs flawlessly
